 Headwaters Youth Conservation Corps, an AmeriCorps National Service Program serving the Upper Susquehanna and Chenango River Watersheds, in partnership with NYS DEC Rogers Environmental Education Center is recruiting for two Environmental Educator corpsmember positions.  One position will serve the Norwich Family YMCA Camp Thompson in Chenango County.  The second position will serve in partnership with 4H of Chenango County.  The term of service will begin May 16, 2006 and will end on August 12, 2006.  The two candidates selected will receive training for their first four weeks of service through the Rogers Environmental Interpretation Institute in Sherburne, NY.  Housing may be available.

 Earn an education award valued at $1,000
(awarded at the completion of the term of service) 

 Earn a living allowance valued at $2,180
(paid out in bi-weekly increments during the term of service from June 23th to Aug. 15th 2008.)


Qualifications:
 

Applicants must be 17 – 25 years of age.  Must be a U.S. Citizen.  Applicants who are interested in pursuing a teaching career in environmental education or natural sciences are preferred.
 

 Application Deadline:

 Aapril 15th, 2006, or until both positions are filled.


Scope of Work and Service Activities:

 The Environmental Educators will enhance the environmental education programs of the YMCA Summer Camp or work in the community teaching 4H curricula.  Technical assistance will be provided by the NYS DEC Rogers Environmental Education Center staff.  The scope of work is expected to include the following responsibilities and activities:

  • Lead small group environmental education activities with children ages 5 – 12. 
     

  • Support the efforts of camp staff to incorporate environmental education activities into daily programming and activities.
     

  • At the Norwich Family YMCA camp, lead environmental service learning projects that utilize the conservation service projects of the HYCC crew serving at the camp.
     

  • At the Norwich Family YMCA Camp, assist the HYCC crew with conservation service projects at the camp as needed & as available (estimated at 10% of total work time).
     

  • Utilize the resources and expertise of NYS DEC Rogers Environmental Education Center to provide environmental education services of the highest quality.
     

  • Utilize the technical resources and expertise of HYCC to help provide environmental education services of the highest quality.
